Inter-districts body building championship
June 19 will be a red letter day in the annals of body building in Tamil Nadu.
Babu of Sky Gym [known as ‘Sky’ Babu in Tamil Nadu Amateur Body Building Association] did the unthinkable by organising inter- districts body building championship with a prize money of Rs.1 lakh for the overall winner! The competition was held at Sir Theyagaraya Arts & Science College, T.H. Road, Chennai 21.

Munusamy is sure to rock the nationals, win gold and bring laurels to Tamil Nadu

We take our hats off to this amazing gentleman who has showered cash prizes that are perhaps offered only at the Nationals. Another gentleman who deserves praise is ‘Royapuram’ Mano of the Congress party who worked with Babu in organising and sponsoring this competition. The efforts of Suresh of Youth Congress in working with Babu and Mano deserve special mention. Chennai-based television channel, Vasanth TV, gave a live coverage of the entire competition. The chief guest at the event was Union Minister of Shipping and Congress leader G.K. Vasan. He was in all praise of the awesome threesome in organising such a fantastic event to mark the birthday of “the future of the Congress party,” Rahul Gandhi.

The condition Munusamy displayed at the prejudging was a sight to behold

As regards cash prize, the winner of each category was given Rs. 10,000; second place finisher Rs. 5,000 ; and third place finisher, Rs. 3000/-. Though all champions who won the title in each class were in great condition, Munusamy of 65 kg class was the hero of the day. The condition he displayed at the prejudging was a sight to behold. It has been a long time since any of us had seen a thing like this – he was a mini Li John and Bobby Singh rolled into one. He was full, ripped and dry. Each muscle stood out as if there was no skin covering it. Munusamy is sure to rock the nationals, win gold and bring laurels to Tamil Nadu.

M. Venkatesh who won the title in 75 kg category, a national champion, was also in very good shape. V. Senthil Kumar of Tiruvallur, who has been State champion several times, was at his best and rocked the 55 kg class.

V. Murugan and E. Karthik were also clear winners of their classes.

How to build stubborn calves

Posted in training on July 19, 2010 by takeupsculpting

A legendary champion once said that calves were “stubborn monkeys.”
There are several training techniques and programmes which can shock stubborn calves into growth. I recently bumped into a routine recommended by an IFBB champion, who wows the audience every time he flexes onstage.

I have seen a Mr. India winner also recommend a similar training programme to his students.
Week 1: Train calves every day, performing only one exercise (4 sets of 12 reps each).
Week 2: No calf training
Week 3: Train the claves on three non-consecutive days. But, perform five drop sets of 12 reps each (i.e., after performing the first set, reduce the weight four more times, doing 12 reps every time). Altogether, you will be performing a total of 60 reps for the calves.
Repeat the cycle for two or three months.
Try this routine and see if your calves start growing into cows.

Laughter improves health

Laughter is the best medicine – so goes the old adage.
You may be surprised to hear that having a good laugh every now and then indeed offers an array of health benefits.
Researchers from Maryland Medical Centre (Baltimore), the U.S., observed persons who watched funny television programmes every day for 30 minutes and concluded that such persons are less prone to suffering a heart attack.
Studies from Japan have stated that watching comedies regularly and having a good laugh often helps in lowering blood sugar. Researchers have also found that laughter regulates the immune system, increases energy expenditure by 10 to 20 per cent (burns more calories) and eases pain in the muscles by relaxing them.
An adult, on an average, laughs only once an hour it seems. Health experts say that by keeping our mind relaxed, listening to jokes, watching comedies and having a hearty laugh frequently can go hand-in-hand with a lifestyle committed to fitness and good health.

E. Arul of A.R. Fitness, Chennai, deserves praise for regularly conducting body building competitions.
The man once again organized a Mr. Chennai contest on June 6 at Dr. Ambedkar Arangam, ICF.
We, at Team Masters, thank Mr. Arul and his brothers for encouraging hard working body builders, year after year. We also thank our good friend E. Ponmudi, Junior National champion, for his effort in conducting the show and warm reception.
About 150 bodybuilders competed in this event. Cash prizes to the tune of Rs. 2,000, Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 1,000 were given to the top three finishers respectively.

The highlight of the event was the fight for the overall title between Munusamy and Venkatesh. Though not bone dry, Munusamy’s newly acquired size and thickness got him the title.

That Munusamy has made tremendous progress when compared to his previous show, the Inter-District competition staged in February this year, needs special mention. His hard work, discipline and commitment have borne fruit. Venkatesh, former national champion has also made excellent change in size and thickness and is sure to win more national titles.
